दर्पण जो दिखाता है
मैं उसे ही मानता हूं सत्य
जो मुझसे जुड़ा है
जो दिखाई नहीं पड़ता वह नहीं है
ऐसा नहीं है
सत्य जो दर्पण नहीं जानता
मैं जानता हूं
सत्य दिखाई नहीं पड़ता अक्सर
दिखाई पड़ते हैं नकाब और पोशाकें
जिन्हें हम खरीद सकते हैं
बड़ी-बड़ी सजी दुकानों से
और झुठला सकते हैं दर्पण को ।
सत्य हम जानते हैं
फिर भी आईने के सामने खड़े होते हैं
अनजान बनकर
अजनबी की तरह
दर्पण की गहराई नापना मुश्किल है
फिर भी हम डूबते नहीं
तैरते रहते हैं
महज वहमों के लिए
कभी पार उतरते नहीं
पार उतरना हमारा उद्देश्य नहीं
हमें तो बस तैरना
तैरते रहना वहमों में
और देखते रहना दर्पण में
ओढ़े हुए असत्य को ।

What the mirror shows
I take to be the only truth,
the truth bound up with me.
What cannot be seen does not exist?
It is not so.
The truth the mirror does not know,
I know.
Truth is often not seen;
what is seen are masks and clothes,
which we can buy
from big, well-dressed shops,
and so belie the mirror.
We know the truth,
and still we stand before the glass
pretending not to know,
like strangers.
It is hard to measure the depth of a mirror,
yet we do not drown,
we keep floating
for the sake of mere illusions.
We never cross to the other bank;
crossing is not our aim.
We only want to float,
to keep floating in illusions,
and keep looking in the mirror
at the untruth we wear.
