English
It makes me very angry
when, even after drinking,
I stay sober:
things look even clearer,
I feel naked,
I begin to see myself in me.
It makes me very angry
when I realise
I am not what I seem,
outside, in white clothes,
washed clean.
It makes me very angry
when I drink a little more
and the truth shows more plainly.
I panic,
I shout loudly,
I hold forth
about myself, in a loud voice,
to hide my truth.
Then it makes me very angry
when I find
that people already know the truth.
Then I ask for one small
last peg,
and quietly, eyes lowered,
I head home
slowly, holding
in my hands
on one side a quiet emptiness,
on the other my own cast-off skin,
swearing
that I too will become something.
But it makes me very angry
when the stupor breaks,
home has come,
and over my quiet soul
I have pulled the old skin on again.
