A report on the all-India silkscreen workshop that opened the new graphics section of the Government College of Art and Craft, Calcutta, organised with the Lalit Kala Akademi and the All India Fine Arts and Crafts Society. Jai Zharotia came from Delhi with Anupam Sood and Krishna Ahuja, among twenty participating artists, and the senior printmakers worked alongside the students late into the night.

Zharotia explained the direct method used at the workshop and how far silkscreen had come: once thought fit only for flat colour, it could now give texture, watermarks, brushwork and fine line. With just four colours he made a print of a human figure blooming into a bouquet against a mauve ground.

The advantage of the silkscreen method is that whatever you think you do directly.
