An interview at the time of Myths and Mysteries, Zharotia’s solo exhibition at Art Today, New Delhi, made while he was Head of the Department of MFA Painting at the College of Art, Delhi. He describes a working day that begins at five in the morning and explains why the animals in his paintings take on human qualities: we are all part of a greater whole, and the source of all living beings is the same.
He speaks of the Bull and Woman series of 1984, of moving from watercolour to mixed media because “the expression is more important than the medium”, and of a coming exhibition based on poetry.
I get up at five in the morning, and paint for at least four hours, before going to college.
