Exhibition text introducing Zharotia as one of India’s most sensitive painters, born in 1945 into a poor craftsman’s family and later a professor at the College of Art, New Delhi, where he had studied. It describes his paintings as a fusion of poetry and common sense, with metamorphic images combining human forms with plants, birds, animals and objects.
The writer notes his ironic humour at the expense of convention and hypocrisy, and new images in which tender feelings sprout like flowers from a body.
Jai’s images come into focus only when one has looked at them quietly and in meditation.
